Sažetak
Western corn rootworm (WCR) was discovered in eastern Croatia in 1995. The pest is spread over a distance of 40 km per year. Because of the big corn production in Croatia, the damages caused by WCR on corn are of great importance. The pest has infested 19.000 km2 in which area 250.000 ha of corn is sown. Based on the literature and climatic data the terms of the first emergence and the emergence of 50% of larvae and adults were calculated. First occurrence of larvae in the field was established by soil examination. In the emergency cages the emergence of adults was observed. Results were compared with the prognosis. The temperature thresholds and thermal constants for larval hatching given by Levine et al. (1992) correspond to the larval hatching in the field. First larval hatching in east Croatia could be expected between May 16th and June 9th. The temperature thresholds and thermal constants for adult emergence could be used for prognosis of the first adult emergence in the field. Summarizing of the effective temperatures should start when egg hatching begins. The emergence of beetles starts between June 15 and July 4 with an average being June 30. The emergence of females began 3-4 days after the appearance of males. The beetles emerged period is 27-36 days. Phenograms of the development of WCR were made. Results of the investigation of the biology show that the differences between the biology in Croatia and in the USA are minor.
