Sažetak
There are reasons to believe that certain groups of language precepts or stigmata, originally formulated by influential people or by institutions, become mapped onto the culture regardless of their linguistic justification. We have also suggested that the popular image of correct language (and that seems to be valid for English and Croatian) consists of a reduced number of indicators, while lots of other divided, unsettled usages remain in the dark. We have pointed out a small segment of British cultural knowledge that might pass unnoticed by non-native university students of English which, in turn, would deprive them of a few clues for a full understanding of some types of English texts.
