Sažetak
Introduction: The rising proportion of the elderly in the Croatian population has resulted from both the increased life expectancy and the decreased birth rate and fertility. Health care of the elderly cannot be performed, improved and developed unless the gerontologic-public health data on the health needs and functional abilities of this population are well known. Aims: Health care needs of the elderly make a substantial segment of the overall health care requirements, not only due to the high proportion of this population but primarily because of the specificities of their health condition, multiple comorbidity, and declining functional ability. Therefore, the main objective of the Registry of Health Care Requirements of the Elderly is to meet the objectively established health needs of the elderly in order to improve their health condition and preserve their functional abilities at large. Materials and methods: The gerontologic-public health analytical interest is focused on defined relationship with the structure of utilization and cost of geriatric health care in target old, very old and very very old age groups relative to the prevalence of mortality and morbidity indicators from the gerontologic database and indicators collected by use of standardized methodologic instrumentarium, i.e. Filing lists No. 1, 2, 2.2 and 3 for monitoring health requirements of elderly beneficiaries. Results: Gerontologic-public health analysis of the hospitalization structure in Croatia in 2003 according to the predominant groups of diseases in patients aged  65 pointed to a significant prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, accounting for as much as 24.96% of 185221 geriatric patient hospitalizations. Gerontologic analysis of the comparison of the leading causes of death in the <64 vs  65 age group according to the most common groups of diseases in Croatia in 2003 yielded quite intriguing rank dissemination, where deaths from respiratory diseases ranked fifth in the <64 and third in  65 age group. Conclusion: These gerontologic indicators from the Registry provide reliable information for the implementation and evaluation of the program of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention for the elderly, which will greatly contribute to the preservation and promotion of healthy aging in the Croatian population at large, thus directly influencing the structure of the national health care system as well as the retirement-disablement insurance system and economic system.
