Sažetak
We present results of the workshop held during the launch of the WHO World Report on violence and Health for the countries of south-east Europe. The launch was organised in Zagreb in March 2003, by the Croatian Ministry of Health, the School of Public Health "Andrija Stampar", WHO/EURO and WHO/HQ. The high-level representatives of ministries of health from following countries participated at the launch: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Romania and Serbia. The topic of the workshop was how to implement recommendations of the World Report on Violence and Health and to do a SWOT analysis of issues that are relevant for implementation of the recommendations. Results of the SWOT analysis are following: Strenghts: Existing commitment to deal with violence as a health issue ; possibility to link work on violence prevention with current global initiatives ; existing knowledge and expertise at community and national level and at NGO level. Weaknesses: Lack of funding ; competing priorities ; uncertain endorsement from higher levels ; uneven spread of expertise ; lack of knowledge ; high tolerance of violence in the society. Opportunities: Committment of certain number of professionals to strenghthen work on violence ; existing data on violence ; increased public support. Threats: Cultural resistance to change attitudes ; gender inequality ; segmentation of work on violence prevention - insufficient exchange of expertise and knowledge between sectors. As next steps participants identified a need to assess current situation in violence prevention from the health sector point of view, establishment of an inter-sectoral task force at the Ministry of Health that would co-ordinate activities on violence prevention and strengthening of public health advocary in realtion to violence.
