The aim of this study is to report on diagnostic ability and clinical significance of transesophageal echocardiography(TEE)in diagnosis of itracardial masses. Author prospectively analyzed the results of 525 TEE in a 7-year period (between May 1996 and May 2003).The study group consisted of 64 consecutive patients (37 men and 27 women)age range 24-80 years (mean age 56.4+/-13.19).Intracardial masses were detected in 64 patients. Atrial tumor was detected in 14(22%)patients, left atrial in nine, and right atrial tumor in five patients.We found 10 left atrial myxoma in nine patients, and two right atrial myxoma, one right atrial leiomyosarcoma, one right atrial fibroelastoma, and one right atrial metastatic adenocarcinoma.Thrombus was detected in 25(39%)patients, left atrial thrombus in 15, right atrial thrombus in two, and left ventricular thrombus in eight patients.Vegetations were detected in 25(39%)patients, valvular vegetations in 23, and pacing lead vegetation in rwo patients.There was no false-negative and false-positive TEE diagnosis, yealding a 100%sensitivity and specificity of TEE in detecting intracardial masses. There was good correlation betweeen the mass size as measure with TEE and macroscopically upon surgical removal (r=0.91).
