Sažetak
The first attempts of stone cutting by means of diamond wire date back to the years of 1965 and 1966, when the company Diamant-Boart applied a steel rope with diamond segments (beads) on the stationary plant in the stone block sewery (ACIMM, 1984). For the first time this wire was presented at the international exhibition Marmomacc in Sant Ambrogio di Valpolicella in 1969 and then again in 1970, after it had been tested in the stone sewery Sega di Cavaion (Verona). The real beginning of the diamond wire application in exploitation of dimension stone is the year of 1977 when Luigi Madrigali produced a mobile machine, which was called bicicletta (bicycle) and was used upon exploitation of blocks in the quarry. In less than a few years this machine was in use in more than hundred quarries in the Carrara area (Trancu, 1980). The advantages of this machine compared to the classic helicoidal wire saw, caused gradual replacement of classic saw by the diamond one. Soon, the classic saw was completely excluded, first in Italy and then in other countries as well, for instance in Greece, Spain, Portugal, Croatia etc. Therefore, the year of 1980 is regarded as the year in which the diamond wire saw was generally recognised as a basic machine upon block exploitation in quarries. The efficiency of diamond wire saw upon exploitation of dimension stone depends on the right choice of the constructional and technological factors of the machine, diamond wire and conditions and way of exploitation in the particular kind of the rock. One of these parameters is the steel rope of diamond wire. A long-standing work on testing and certifying of hoisting ropes, experience and knowledge acquired upon these testings, aroused us to a detailed analysis and testing of the ropes which are used in diamond wire shaping. The importance of these testings was additionally confirmed by the reference date (Pinzari, 1981), according to which there was a lack of experimental measuring of quality and durability of diamond wire ropes.
