Sažetak
There is a great interest in platinum(II) complexes not only because of their importance in organic synthesis and catalytic processes but also from biological and pharmacological point of view. A large number of complexes containing platinum metals have been found effective in the treatment of some animal and human carcinomas. Their biological and chemical activity is greatly influenced by the structure of the ligands coordinated to the metal ions. Therefore a great deal of research has been directed towards the complexes of ligands which are important in medicinal and biological systems. This led us to investigate platinum complexes with oganophosphorus compounds, in particular derivatives of various phosphonic acids, can exihibit antibiotic, antibacterial and antiviral activity, the coordination chemistry of this class of phosphorus ligands has drawn relatively little attention.
We report here the crystal and molecular structure of ethyl 2-quinolylmethylphosphonate. It would be expected that this ligand binds in a bidentate manner via the quinolyl nitrogen and the phosphoryl oxygen donor atoms, however it can act as a monodentate ligand through the nitrogen and in acidic media the quinolinium salts of tetrahalogenoplatinate anions have been isolated. The crystal structure of its tetrabromoplatinum(II) complex is also examined. The preliminary screening tests showed that most of these compexes exhibit some cytostatic activity.
