Sažetak
Aim: To seek out the regulations about public health in the medieval statutes of the cities placed on the south east Croatian Adriatic coast. Methods: The original documents or translated text editions of the statutes of 10 cities from the eastern Adriatic coast written in 13^th and 14^th century have been examined. Results: The research of selected archives revealed numerous examples of direct or indirect ways of protecting public health. Among these, the most explicit are examples which tell us about keeping public cleanness and treating garbage, faeces, and dirty waters. Rules about healthy water and food are also mentioned. In addition, prostitutes and persons who deal with potion making were especially sanctioned as a potential threat to public health. Conclusion: Described rules are important from the historical point of view, but also as a reflection of awareness about public health as a condition of survival and progress.
