Sažetak
This paper reports on an empirical study that was performed on hundred leading firms in Croatia. The paper attempts to offer some insight on the relationship between product and process innovation on one side, and competitive rivalry and competitive strategy on the other side. Firms are clustered according to reported rivalry intensity and competitive strategy, and these clusters are examined with respect to firm characteristics and with respect to innovation output. This paper presents two main findings. First, more intense rivalry discourages innovation, which confirms prior research findings. Second, there is a inconsistency between competitive strategy and innovation strategy in leading firms in Croatia. In particular, findings in this paper raise doubts about whether the chosen strategy is based on companies’ strengths, and whether the company has full knowledge about what this strategy entails and how to make it work in the long run.
