Sažetak
The Republic of Croatia is a small SE European country (area 56.538 km2) with small population (about 4, 8 million), which suffers huge damages from disasters, particularly those caused by water. Most countries primarily focus on mitigating the risks and consequences of water disasters by timely warning and adherence to the sustainable development principles. The disasters clearly cannot be avoided but the damage (direct or indirect) they cause can certainly be reduced. Analysis of disasters in Croatia during the period 1980-2002 indicates that about 44 % of damages are attributed to floods and droughts, namely the disasters caused by water.
