Sažetak
The first part of the paper deals with general economic conditions prevailing in Croatia. The main economic indicators show that Croatia has a rather stabile economic policy, low rate of inflation, but at the same time an enormous trade deficit. In the second part, the authors provide an explanation as to the Croatian approach in regard to the European Union, comparing economic conditions between Croatia and the new members countries. It is pointed out, that, in order for growth to be sustainable, it would be most important to foster investment, in particulary FDI, in order to improve the competitiveness of the industrial sector. In the third part of the paper, focus is given to the current Croatian regional policy - what are the current circumstances and what are the forthcoming steps. According to the authors' opinion, there is currently no regional policy which defines in a coherent way the needs, actions and measures for fostering the Croatian comparative and competitive advantages. The institutional framework and adequate co-ordinaton mechanisms should be set up on all levels as well as the overall coherent law on regional development. Capacity should be raised on all levels, particuarly within the co-ordination body in charge of planning, programming, implementing and financing regional development.
