Sažetak
Franjo Ksaver Kuhač (1834-1911), alias Franz Xaver Koch, is generally considered the father figure of Croatian 19th-century historical and comparative musicology. He started publishing articles on various musico-historiographical issues in the mid-1860s, followed by several books and folk music collections. Among them the best known are articles on the Croatian origins of such outstanding European composers as Joseph Haydn, Franz Liszt, Giuseppe Tartini, etc., folk music instruments and Croatian music terminology ; the books Vatroslav Lisinski i njegovo doba (Vatroslav Lisinski and his Time ; Zagreb 1887) and Ilirski glazbenici (Illyrian Composers ; Zagreb 1893) ; and four volumes of Južno-Slovjenske narodne popievke (South Slavic Folk Songs ; Zagreb, 1878-81). Kuhač's main thesis is that art music based on folk music, i.e. « ; ; ; ethnic/national music» ; ; ; (narodna glazba), is opposed to the so-called world, i.e. supranational music (svjetska glazba), and that only « ; ; ; ethnic/national music» ; ; ; has a future as artistic relevant artefact. In this, firstly, the very idea of singular « ; ; ; ethnic/national musics» ; ; ; should be constructed and socio-psychologically established, and then the correlating music created. Some of the inspiration for these ideas can be traced in extra-musical spheres such as early German Romantic literature theories (Goethe, Schiller, etc.). Italian and German musicians and musical culture in general have succeeded both in the past and present to create such corresponding « ; ; ; people's musics» ; ; ; of Italy and Germany ; hence their global success with international audiences. According to Kuhač, the Slavic (later South-Slavic, and finally Croatian) world should organize its spirituality, culture and musical life in critical relation to its Germanic and Italian counterparts. This should be done by (re)constructing its own musical history, (re)creating musical terminology in vernacular language(s) and in producing art music, i.e. compositional output and performing of « ; ; ; elevated» ; ; ; music, based on corresponding folk music(s). The final goal of the rising « ; ; ; people's» ; ; ; music culture(s) of Slavic nation(s) is to bring to the world music scene « ; ; ; new material» ; ; ; and « ; ; ; original forces» ; ; ; , although not in the form of a confrontation but of a market-type competition, and – in spite of some exaggerations – avoiding nationalistic arrogance and chauvinism. Such ideas of Kuhač as well as his practical work in collecting folk tunes were later to be used as the ideological premises and material basis for the early 20th-century Croatian so-called neo-national style in art music composing.
