Sažetak
Carniolan bee (Apis mellifera carnica Pollmann, 1879.), autochthonous race in Croatia, is well-known and appreciated across the world due to its high graded distinctive features. Therefore, selection has an important role in preservation of prime characteristics of Carniolan bee. The purpose of selection work in beekeeping is not only to improve one race quality, but more of them simultaneously. The aim of this study is to apply the method of selection index calculation on 141 queens, tested in the period from 2001 until the end of 2003 year. Testing of the queens was carried out by assorted and registered breeders on their apiaries (testing stations) in cooperation with Croatian Livestock Center and Faculty of Agriculture in Zagreb. The following parameters were observed for every tested queen: honey production, the number of frames with bees, the number of brood frames, aggressiveness, bee calmness on the comb and swarming tendency. The notes about these parameters were registered in breeding cards once a month, for each queen individually. Selection index was determined for every queen in the test and was analyzed in comparison to geographic regions and the year of ending test. Calculation of selection index for breeding value estimation provide us an opportunity to classify and to sellect genetically superior queens for further breeding process.
