Sažetak
Trans-European corridors carry the vast majority of all trade and transit in the SouthEast Europe region. Among the most important are the Corridor X connecting Central Europe with the SoutEast Europe and Turkey, and the Corridor V, with three branches connecting Norhern Europe with the Adriatic Sea. The Corridor Vc generates significant, year-around, economic direct and indirect activity for the region, but because of its pesent limited capacity, its potentail is far from being fully utilized. Corridor X has been considerably upgraded given its strategic significance for the EU and the Corridor Vb, connecting Rijeka to Budapest, is also being upgraded. On the other hand, the Corridor Vc has undergone very little upgrades so far. Because of significant infrastructural and other bottlenecks, its impact on the socio-economic development of the region is still very limited. The infrastructure bottlenecks include the port of Ploče, the gateway to the corridor, which limited cargo handling capacity impacts the overall Corridor Vc efficiency. Rail and road infrastructure are in very poor shape and considerable investments are needed for their upgrade to the level that would satisfy the ever increasing demand. In addition there are institutional bottlenecks, resulting from numerous and underdeveloped border crossings, different customs, traffic and commercial legislative and regulations, as well as, bureaucratic barriers.
