Sažetak
The study was conducted on a selected boys alpine skiers. They were memebers of Croatian national selection between 11 and 14 years old. They had all exercised regularly from 3 to 7 years. All physiological and morphological assesments were conducted at the beginning of training cycle, just before the competition started and again at the end of competitive season. Maximal oxygen uptake, absolute and relative, was measured directly during continuous progressive test on a treadmill. Anthropometric measurments were also teaken. Vertical jump test was performed on Ergo jump platform. Conventional statistical procedures were applied to analyze the data. The obtained data suggest that desireable body composition for elite skiers may be attained by early adolescence. Inspite of the body mass gain of almost 8 kg, looking through the season, the mean value of bnody fat decreased. The percentage of the body fat varied throughout the season. Absolute and relative maximal oxygen uptake were significantly greater than average value for normal population in Croatia of the same age group. It is importaint to point out that relative maximal oxygen uptake showed increase through the time in spite of the fact that body mass also increases in that period. Considering the decrease in percentage of body fat, it can be concluded that the body composition of young skiers changed primarily because of the increased muscle mass component that contributed to the increase in relative maximal oxygen uptake.
