Sažetak
Idea Here are presented data from ongoing prospective study on diagnostic delay of oral and oropharyngeal cancer. Oral cavity and oropharynx is most accessible anatomic site for detection of neoplastic lesions, but in our daily work we usually see many cases of unrecognized and wrongly treated patients with cancer mentioned sites. Method In the period from 01.01.2001.- 01.10.2004., we treated 102 patients with oral/oropharyngeal cancer. Study included 74 patients with exact follow up and medical data for diagnostic delay. 50 (68%) patients had an oral cancer and 24 (32%) had an oropharyngeal cancer. Results In 31 (42%) patients neoplastic condition were urecognized or medically mistreated. Portion of diagnostically delayed patients concernig anatomic site was: tonsillar region 50%, floor of mouth 45%, base of tongue 44%, oral tongue 24%. Period from first signs/symptoms occurance on misdiagnosed patients (31) to a final diagnosis was 0.5-7.5 months (Average 0.8 months). Conclusions Considering our results it is concerning fact of such high percentage of diagnostically delayed patients especially in anatomic sites that are easily detectable by simple visual or physical examination.
