Sažetak
The length, mass, sex structure and growth of loach fish (Cobitis t. narentana) populations from the Neretva Delta were investigated. The biology and ecology of this loach have never been studied - the only known data are from Karaman (1928) and are related mostly to the geographical distribution and description of the species. Our sample of 211 specimens showed a length structure with a maximal length of 100 mm for females, with the major group in 70 - 75 mm length class. Males reach a maximal length of 65 mm, with the majority group in 55 - 60 mm class. The mass structure paralleled the length, so that the females reach 6 g and the males only 1.75 g. The relation of the sexes was 1:4.4 for the females, while at some localities the males were not found or were present in a very small portion (1:10.3), but at one locality, the males were dominant (1:2.7). We established 0+ to 4+ year classes. In the females the 1+ year class was the dominant, followed by the 2+, plus a few specimens in the 3+ year class. The males die mostly at the end of 2+ year season. On the basis of the average lengths for a particular year class, we constructed a von Bertalanffy growth curve. The model obtained shows good growth in the males and less so in the females. There are small point aberrations from the curve. The coefficient of growth point to the faster growth in the males than in the females.
