Sažetak
The author attempts capturing linguistic and social ideologies behind the compilation of four major monolingual dictionaries published in Croatia in the twentieth century. He also outlines the attitudes of both philologists and the general public towards them. The author argues that the role of the monolingual dictionary in society is understood in a peculiar, rather prescriptive way in Croatia, which seems to discourage lexicographers, resulting in a comparative paucity of monolingual dictionaries in that country.
