Sažetak
Maize breeding program in the Bc Institute was started in 1947, in Botinec, near Zagreb. It resulted in development of a large of maize hybrids of which 231 were registered in Croatia and 30 abroad. Today, Bc hybrids are planted on more than 50 % of maize growing area in Croatia. The aim of this investigation was to estimate contribution of Bc hybrids in maize production growth in Croatia. Also, combining ability was tested for seven maize lines for grain yield and resistance to stalk anthracnose. 16 hybrids from FAO 300, 400 and 500 developed between 1962 and 1993 were tested in three field trials. Average yield increase of 0, 89 dt/ha per year was calculated by regression of yield per year of registration. Based on diallel analysis, domestic line Bc 14, exhibited good combining ability with the elite lines from heterotic groups Stiff Stalk Synthetic (BSSS) and Lancaster and is therefore very important in our own breeding program. The related line Bc 10 expressed resistance to stalk anthracnose and was used only as a source of resistance.
