Sažetak
Background and purpose: Within the macrobenthic communities of streams, permanent and temporary fauna can be distinguished. Materials and methods: Samples were collected monthly, using a modified Coffman sampler on four sites of a section of the Sava River, from Krško to Jesenice. Food resources, substrate and macroinvertebrates, were analysed in order to investigate the proportions of the permanent and temporary components and similarity values in the community. Results and conclusions: Temporary fauna amounted to 60% of the total species found, the remainder being accounted for by permanent species. Taking biomass into consideration, a significant domination of temporary fauna was found at all investigated sites, the proportion being greater than 65%. Permanent species are more frequent than temporary. This is the result of the particular nature of the life cycles and of species drift in periods of high discharge. From the analysed differences in the composition of the macroinvertebrate community on gravel, pebbles and cobles, we concluded that the physical characteristics of microhabitats, such as discharge and substrates, have the greatest influence on community similarity.
