Sažetak
The face of the Central and Eastern European countries (CEEC) is vastly different from the one at the beginning of 1990s, which is the result of the collapse of socialist system in the late 1980s and the transition process from the command-distribution economy to market economy started more or less simultaneously in these countries. These political and economic changes have created myriad investment and business opportunities on which foreign investors have not only responded, but participated in the creation of new ones. While the early 1990s were dominated by inflows of portfolio investments, the following were dominated by foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows. Based on the analysis of FDI inflows in the CEEC, the ratio of FDI inflows to region's performance and its potential, as well as expectations regarding the region's investment prospect, the main purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of the EU enlargement process in shaping the future business frame of references in general and particularly in strengthening FDI inflows in the CEEC. Concerning that main economic effects of EU enlargement have already started and were developing simultaneously with the transition process, it is unlikely to expect the dramatic economic gains (and losses) or changes, especially in the short run. EU enlargement may significantly improve the prospects for foreign investors in the CEEC, but the final outcome depends not on membership alone, but on the willingness and competence of national policies in designing such FDI and in general investment policy which will attract only investment having sustainable growth potential. In addition, it depends on the capacity of companies to anchor changes in all spheres of their operation.
