Sažetak
Until recently treated as the first Croatian general synthetic history of music, the Hadrović's book A Short History of Music published in 1911 managed to preserve, after discovery made by the authographer (History of Music) Vjenceslav Novak, only a status of the first ever published Croatian history of music. The Canon of Vrhbosna, the organist and director of Sarajevo Cathedral, singing and organ-playing teacher in the Seminary of Sarajevo, composer of numerous ecclestiastic songs, Stjepan Hadrović tried his skill in the field of historiography as well. Based on researches conducted up to now, it is difficult to determine his real motives for such a demanding work. He was, perhaps urged on, as Novak was, with pedagogical necessities. From the other side, also, it is possible that Hadrović felt the need of, at the time indeed small but entirely neglected, music public (both in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia), for such texts. The book was written for a broader music reading-public, a large number of samples confirms that. And that was the title Abriss der ellgemeinen Musikgeschichte fuer Lehrerseminare und Dilettanten by Bernhard Kothe, which gained rather huge popularity and was subject to many edition: from History on the already affirmed, summarized, popular history of music. Like Novak, he, however, added to the end the history of the Croatian music, prepared, as its subtitle says, according to the works of Franjo Kuhač. Publishing of this smallish booklet was notified and valorized in the cultural magazines of that time from Sarajevo to Rijeka, Osijek and Zagreb. Outlined according one of the most relevant standard historical text-books in times of Hadrović, his A Short History of Music nowdays, naturally, does not have an usable value, but has the historiographic one, though. Actually, it remained the only printed historical synthesis of one Croatian author for three decades, all until 1942 when History of Music, written by Andreis and the first volume of Review of the History of Music, written by Pettan, were issued.
