Sažetak
Background and aim: Most investigations focus on morphologic examination based on evaluation of intima media thickness (IMT) or luminal diameter. This investigation explored potential correlation of IMT, systolic diameter, diastolic diameter and carotid strain with three resistance indexes. Patients and methods: The investigation was conducted on 150 healthy volunteers. The subjects underwent cardiovascular and risk factor assessment. Measurements were performed on Aloka 5500-SSD Prosound ultrasound platform using B mode, M mode and Doppler mode analysis on common carotid arteries (CCA). Luminal strain (LS), midwall strain (MS) and resistance indexes (pulsatility index (PI), resistance index (RI) and systolic peak’ s ratio (A/B)) were computed mathematically. Pearson’ s correlation was used for evaluation. Results: There were 104 women and 46 men aged 50, 57+/-14, 33 yrs, median 52, 5 yrs. There were 119 (80%) normotensive subjects and 29 (20%) well managed hypertensive subjects, average blood pressure values were 122+/-11 over 77+/-7 mmHg. There were 38 overweight subjects (25%): 10 men and 28 women. There were 85 non-smokers (57%). PI was above the normal range (right CCA 1, 51+/-0, 34 ; left CCA 1, 48+/-0, 29), RI and A/B were within the normal limits. Positive correlation was determined between resistance indexes and CCA diameter (p<0, 05), less substantial positive correlation between resistance indexes and IMT while no correlation was found between resistance indexes and LS or MS. Conclusion: Our investigation proved that carotid strain is independent from carotid resistance. Separate examination protocols are necessary when evaluating carotid strain or carotid resistance.
