Sažetak
Serpentine, Mg3Si2O5(OH)4, is acceptable raw material for the production of high purity magnesium oxide and silica. The thermal decomposition of serpentine from locality Ljeskovac, Croatia, was investigated with the aim to establish the optimal characteristics for acid leaching with pure and fine magnesium oxide and silica powder as final products. For that purpose it was necessary break up the crystal structure of serpentine to obtain free magnesium oxide and silica. The first processing consisted of the milling of serpentine to fine powder with particle size less than 200  m and thermal treatment at the temperature of crystal lattice breaking up. From TG and DTA curves the optimum reaction parameters were established: heating time of 180 minutes and temperature of 660  C.
