Sažetak
The aim of this text is to reveal the inadequate preparation and training for teaching and stimulation of learning among students, that the Croatian higher education teachers receive ; as well as to draw attention to possible solutions of this problem. Whilst employment in the lower levels of the educational system requires proof of a minimal level of formal training for teaching, and there are – though insufficient in number – forms of continuing education of teachers, there is no system of training, licensing or preparation for teaching at the level of higher education. Though one might be tempted to think that the synchronisation of Croatia with the European Higher Education Area has begun at the level of “ formal harmonisation” (revision of the existing higher education courses and their harmonisation with the ECTS system, that is currently underway at the Croatian universities), this text expounds the thesis that the lack of competences on behalf of university teachers to implement a successful reform of the curriculum and organisation of teaching and learning directed towards the student will seriously affect the quality of harmonisation of the higher education system in Croatia with the intentions of the Bologna process. According to the traditions, trends and experiences of some European countries, this text outlines the suggestions for the solution of the said problems, with a special emphasis on their effect on the professional promotion of higher education teachers.
