Sažetak
The first national survey included anlyses of Croatian adults according to the prevalence of overweight and obesity.Aims: To determine body mass index (BMI) and prevalence of overweight and obesity in the sample of 30 Croatian localities, including both the coastal (Split, Rijeka) and continental (Zagreb, Osijek) regions. The sample was formed by 5 778 adults, both males and females, aged between 18 and 65 years. Methods: According to the World Health Organization (WHO) criteria, overweight was defined as BMI of 25.0-29.9 kg/cm2, and obesity as BMI>30. Results: The prevalence of overweight was 41.42% and of obesity 18.08%. In the population 59.50% subjects had BMI>25. Higher prevalence for overweight (48.06% and 34.90% respectively), and obesity (20.72% and 14.23% respectively) was found in males than in females. More males (21.14%) than females (15.09%) were obese (BMI>30, 0). In both sexes, BMI increased with age. The highest prevalence of obesity was found in the continental region of Zagreb in both sexes (males 26.0%, females 18.6%). Conclusions: On the basis of high prevalence of overweight and obesity, there is an urgent necessity to apply strategies in order to achieve lifestyle modifications.
