Sažetak
The aim of the study was to access normal values of the middle cerebral artery breath holding index in healthy males and females. Healthy volunteers (180 males and 180 females) were divided into 6 age groups for each gender. All basal cerebral arteries were evaluated by Transcranial Doppler on standardized manner. Breath holding method was applied in evaluation of cerebrovascular vasoreactivity in the middle cerebral artery and 720 breath holding index values were obtained. middle cerebral artery mean velocity was continuously monitored at least 5 minutes to access baseline values. Breath was held for 20-30 seconds and mean blood flow velocities during last 3 seconds of breath hold was taken in calculation as Vmax velocity value. breath holding index was calculated as a percent of velocity increase from resting baseline values divided by breath holding time. Values of breath holding index were calculated for all subjects and for each gender separately. Statistics was performed by non-parametric χ 2 and Fischer test (statistical significance was obtained at p<0.05 value). Variation coefficient for each age group and Pearson's linear correlation coefficient for mean blood flow velocities and breath holding index values were calculated. Majority (95%) of subjects were in the group of breath holding index values with range 1.03-1.65. No statistically significant decrease in breath holding index values with age was observed (p>0, 05). Contrary, decrease in mean blood flow velocities in all subjects depending on age was registered (p<0.01). Breath holding index is nonagressive, well-tolerated, real-time, reproducible screening method for studying cerebral hemodynamics.
