Sažetak
To respond to demands of the knowledge based economy and the European integration processes, the Croatian educational system needs to undergo radical changes. At the moment the reform of the examination system (introduction of the state matura, etc.) and improvement of the existing syllabi for compulsory education are main projects of the Croatian Ministry of Education. The initiated processes of the curriculum changes and evaluation of the existing syllabi (opinions of 6500 teachers, principals and students were investigated) reveal that one of the weakest points of the current national curriculum are syllabi themselves and traditional teaching methods. Indicated shortcomings of the syllabi (overloaded, not up to date, insufficiently horizontally and vertically coherent, insufficient time allocation for Art, Music and Technology, etc.) point out that they cannot be only improved, but should be replaced with a more up-to-date and coherent curriculum framework and a set of consistent performance standards. Such a complex process is confronting the Croatian educational policy with a need for development of a clear strategy for the curriculum reform and ensuring an appropriate institutional support and human resources (e.g. curriculum specialists, trained teachers and principals) for its successful growth.
