Sažetak
The general idea of the article is that Cultural studies belongs to the “ Sociological Empire” , i.e. represent a specific current in sociological reasoning about contemporary societies. However, compared to mainstream social and sociological theory, Cultural studies characterizes general undertheorization of the social on the one hand, and open advocacy of particular political options on the other. The latter is not problematic in itself: the history of sociology consists of mutual criticisms of the political and ideological implications of various theories. Undertheorization is a different matter. There are loose uses (and abuses) of different, mostly “ post-something” , theoretical orientations that in most of Cultural studies constrain serious discussion about theoretically informed description of modern society. It can be argued that contemporary social and sociological theory benefited from Cultural studies, but it was one-way exchange. This is especially visible in the relationship between sociology of culture and cultural sociology on one hand, and Cultural studies on the other. The logic of development of Cultural studies as an academic discipline can be described in two ways: by looking at its sociogenesis and institutionalization in specific historical and social contexts (British, American, Australian, South-Asian, Latin-American), and by using the logic of fractal differentiation of disciplines (A. Abbott). Both ways support the main argument that Cultural studies pertain to sociological “ worldview” .
