Sažetak
The aim of this study was to re-examine the relation between person-environment fit and job satisfaction. This ambiguous bond was tested in realm of specific socio-economic situation in Croatia nowadays. Respondents were 312 Croatian employees working in different occupations according to Holland's RIASEC types. Job satisfaction was measured by two instruments. The first was a general measure of job satisfaction, while the other was a measure of satisfaction with several different job aspects. Employees' interests were examined by Croatian version of Holland's SDS, and their occupations were described by three-letter RIASEC code consistent with Holland's "The Occupations Finder". P-E congruence was calculated by Iachan index, and on the index base the respondents were divided in four groups by the level of person-job fit: high congruence, reasonably high congruence, not high congruence, and low congruence. In addition, data about workers' absenteeism, salary, and some socio-demographic aspects were collected. Results show very weak or even no relation between P-E fit and job satisfaction. There are no systematic and interpretable differences between four congruence groups in general job satisfaction, as well as in satisfaction with specific job aspects. Further attempts to explain job satisfaction by other correlates like salary, or socio-demographic attributes of employees also failed. Moreover, there is no considerable relation between person-job fit and level of absenteeism as it was expected. It was concluded that P-E fit is not crucial for job satisfaction of Croatian employees. Some other job aspects, included in this research study, were also not related to job satisfaction. It seams that job satisfaction of Croatian workers is depicted by a unique and unexpected pattern and that innovative and broader socio-psychological approach could possible illuminate this phenomenon.
