Sažetak
Authors report 15 years of corneal transplantation, from 1991. till May 2005., which has been done at the Ophthalmology Clinic “ Sveti Duh” in Zagreb. Lions Croatian Eye Bank (LCEB) was founded in December 1995. and became a member of the European Eye Bank Association (EEBA) in the same year. LCEB became an associated member of the International Federation of Eye Banks in the January 2000. and in 2001. Croatian Referral Center of the Ministry of Health for Corneal Transplantation. During this 15 years there is an increased number of collected as well as transplantated corneas. Increased number of suitable corneas for corneal transplantation is also recorded (from 42, 8 % in 1996 to 86, 67 % in 2004). Increasing number of corneas collected from multiorgan explantation is present compared to corneas collected from the Pathology Department. Corneal tissue quality checking in LCEB include mycrobyological analysis of corneal tissue (bacteriological and mycotical), serollogical testing and corneal tissue evaluation (slit-lamp evaluation, qulitative and quantitative endothelial cell evaluation with light miroscope (inverted, phase-contrast)). Corneal tissue has to be decontaminated before its storage in storage media, which is done in the Eye Bank. The rate of microbiological contamination in case where donor tissue was obtained by the physicians from other facilities were higher than when explantation was performed by employees of LCEB, showing the importance of education in the field of eye banking. The most commonly detected infective agents in the storage media were: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Enterococcus spp., MRSE, Acinetobacter spp., MRSA, Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Stenotrophomonas maltophila. In LCEB two corneal storage media are used: intermediate (+ 4° C) and long-term storage (organ culture, + 37° C). At the bigining, corneas were mostly stored in intermediate media, while in last few years long-term storage media is predominantly in use, according to the rule of EEBA. Organ culture enables better corneal quality control, but presumes better skill and education in the field of eye banking.
