Sažetak
Aim: The authors present recent information on the influence of allogenic blood transfusions on corneal allograft survival rate, based on systematic evaluation of published papers. Our aim is to evaluate clinical importance of previous allogenic blood transfusion in corneal graft recipients. Patients and methods: Retrospective review of data published in last ten years is presented, together with findings of a clinical work regarding this subject in the Croatian Referral Center for Corneal Transplantation. Results: Published data in animal models showed increased possibility of corneal graft rejection in corneal recipients which received allogenic blood transfusion in some period during its life. Same seams to be true in humans. Conclusion: Basic research and clinical case reports in the modern literature implicate the connection of previous allogenic blood transfusion with increased corneal allograft rejection rate. However, there is no precise information over the influence of allogenic blood transfusion on the corneal graft rejection regarding following questions: which time interval between the corneal transplantation and transfusion is needed to enhance graft rejection, which type of transfusion (complete blood or blood fractions) influences graft rejection and what is the importance of indication for corneal transplantation („ high-risk“ , „ intermediate-risk“ and „ low-risk“ recipients). Therefore, prospective clinical research aiming to answer cited questions is underway in the Croatian Referral Center for Corneal Transplantation.
