Sažetak
In this paper, based on an empirical survey carried out among 840 young Croatian researchers, professional values/norms and practice in five scientific fields are analysed. Regarding their profesional values and norms, biosciences differ from other sciences and among themselves, in the importance of the relationship toward patients and respondents (biomedicine) and the importance of new life forms created (designed) in research (biotechnical field). When the professional practice of both bioscientific fields is observed, their particular social sensitivity is noticed. Biosciences stand out for their concern for people (biomedicine) and for professional relationships with clientele as well as for the care of the environment (biotechnical disciplines). Ethically deviant and questionable professional practice, generally of rather low incidence, is likewise significantly differentiated with regard to scientific context. Biosciences combine comparatively more frequent forms of exploitation of social and physical environment and pronounced socio-intellectual conformism. Therefore the research ethics in biosciences, together with common professional values and practice, also develops certain specific value and behavioural patterns, mainly related to the social dimension of these scientific professions and, to a lesser degree, to their somewhat softer cognitive profile.
