Sažetak
Romanesque and Gothic capitals of the St. Stephen's Cathedral in Zagreb were built from lithothamnian limestone, which is the autochthonous stone in the Zagreb area. The stone has with time been damaged to such extent, that it needs to be replaced. Travertine has proved to be the most suitable replacement for lithothamnian limestone. The article specifies the basic characteristics of lithothamnian limestone and analyzes the causes of its dilapidation. The article also sets forth the reasons of choosing travertine as a replacement of lithothamnian limestone as well as the course of restauration and art conservation works.
