Sažetak
Corn is the major growing crop in Croatia and approximately covered 400, 000 hectares in the last few years. The most important pest of the corn is European Corn Borer (Ostrinia nubilalis Hübner), but today the Western Corn Rootworm (Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte (WCR) becoming severe pest too. The pest arrived in Croatia in 1995, and in 2000 WCR was spread on 700, 000 ha of arable land. The aim of this study was to evaluate tolerance of corn to WCR larval feeding in east part of Croatia. In 2001 ten and in 2002 fourteen Croatian (Institute of Agriculture, Osijek) and two Pioneer Hybrid Inc. (Johnston, Iowa, USA) commercial corn hybrids were evaluated for WCR resistance at two locations using a randomized block design with four replications. One location was in east Croatia (Gunja), and the other one was 100 km to the west part of country (Osijek). At both locations, root injury was rated using the Iowa State University Node-Injury Scale (0-3) and the hybrids’ tolerance to larval feeding was compared by evaluating root size and root regrowth. Root injury ratings in 2001 averaged 0, 07 and 0, 36 at Osijek and Gunja, respectively and in 2002 averaged 0, 11 and 0, 58 Osijek and Gunja, respectively. In an analysis of variance hybrids differ significantly in root injury in 2001 at both locations, and in 2002 only at Osijek location. Analysis by location showed the hybrids differed significantly in root injury in both years of investigations.
