Sažetak
Ecology and ecophysiology of the dinoflagellate genus Dinophysis are poorly understand mostly because of failure of culture as well as their scarcity. Dinophysis acuta, D. acuminata, D. caudata, D. fortii, D. rotundata, D. sacculus and D. tripos are recorded in the coastal Adriatic water. The most abundance (1, 4 x 104 cells l-1) showed species D. sacculus in summer in the surface layer. Environmental conditions convenient for their growth are different according to the different species of the genus. The most of species appear during stratification period and warmer part of the year. Temperature and salinity appear as important factors that can initiate and maintain their distribution. D. fortii is common in northern part of the Adriatic Sea while it has not been recorded in the southern part. Simultaneously, with Dinophysis abundance the shellfish are tested for Diarrheic Shellfish Toxicity.
