Sažetak
A great number of processes for modification and coating of metal surfaces is systematised according to the basic physical, i.e. chemical principles of the process. The basic principles of the processes, which are mostly applied for increasing wear resistance, are presented. State of the art of certain processes, as well as characteristic examples of application are described. The attention is paid to the great gap between scientific research and industrial application. It is the case in the other countries too, where additional education in the field of surface engineering is provided. It encourages application of modification and coating processes, which multiply increase lifetime of metal machine parts and tools, thus contributing to significant increase of quality of products and economy of production.
