Sažetak
Soils contain naturally occurring elements like potassium (40K), thorium (232Th) and both uranium isotopes (235U and 238U) with their decay products. Unfortunately, there are at present no radiometric maps of Croatian territory and data on naturally occurring radio-element concentrations in Croatian soils are rare until now. In general, it was found that soils developed on the carbonate terrains have higher uranium and thorium content than all other soils present mainly in northern part of Croatia (including Sava, Drava and Dunav river catchment areas). In last century, soils were exposed to the caesium contamination which was the result of wet and dry deposition after nuclear weapon testing events in the 60ies, as well as after the Chernobyl accident in 1986. The use of phosphate fertilizers in agriculture results in additional input of uranium in soils, but it seems that the major part of such added uranium migrates very quickly to groundwater aquifers.
