Sažetak
In many parts of the world, there is increasing interest in shifting to a bio-based economy where agricultural crops, mill waste and fast-growing trees are used as feedstock. The associated bio-processes, involving fermentation, bio-catalysis, biosensors and metabolic engineering, are growth areas where, by definition, biomass becomes a substitute for fossil fuels. Some 14% of the world's primary energy supplies are already provided by bioenergy resources such as forestry and agriculture crops, biomass residues and wastes. Bioenergy today provides millions of households with incomes, livelihood activities and employment.
