Sažetak
The use of blood transfusions to enhance renal allograft survival, based on transfusion-induced immunosuppression, was initially proposed by Opelz et al (1). Prompted by the identification of this lasting immunosuppressive effect, in 1981, Gantt (2) expressed concern about the possible adverse effects of transfusions in patients being treated for cancer. One year later, Burrows and Tartter (3) were the first to report adverse results for colorectal carcinoma patients who received transfusions in a retrospective review of 122 patients otherwise matched for disease location, stage and treatment. Since 1981, many papers have been published on the clinical effects of blood transfusion in patients with large-intestinal cancer (4-10). This retrospective study was therefore designed to determine whether blood transfusion might have an effect on recurrence or survival in a large group of our own patients with curatively resected rectal cancer. Furthermore, we attempted to identify the predictive factors for blood transfusion in rectal cancer resection in order to identify patients who could benefit from other alternatives to allogeneic blood transfusion.
