Sažetak
The paper pertains to some aspects of the socio-cultural life of the new Muslim communities in Europe, made up largely of working-class immigrants. Self-presentation and contest with the larger community within the context of the nation-state, contribute to the formation of an ethnic identity defined as Muslim, though other identities and loyalties are also salient. Size and composition, as well as the legal status of Muslim immigrants in different European countries, determine the ways and the strength of their socio-cultural activities. In any case, the presence of Muslim populations in Europe today represents a phenomena of what might be called "postmodern pluralism", for assimilation and integration may no longer be taken for granted.
