Sažetak
The study was designed to evaluate correlations between markers of eosinophils (ECP) and neutrophils (MPO), and IgE and IL-5 in sinus lavage and to compare it with subjective outcomes in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) after endosinusal treatment. Thirty patients with chronic rhinosinusitis were enrolled in the study. Patients with nasal polyposis or asthma were excluded. The sinus lavage was taken by antral puncture. Patients were treated endosinusally with 2 mg dexamethasone and 40 mg gentamycine per maxillary sinus daily for 5 days. Patients rated nasal disease-specific symptoms at inclusion and after 30 days. Fifteen patients showed improvement (responders) and 15 were unchanged or worsened (nonresponders) after the treatment. Difference in baseline level for MPO, ECP and IL-5 in sinus lavage between responders or nonresponders was significant (p<0.01). Responders had higher baseline level of MPO, ECP and IL-5 in sinus lavage than nonresponders. There was no statistical difference for IgE between responders or nonresponders. Significant correlation was found between ECP and MPO in sinus lavage, as well as between IgE and ECP, MPO and IL-5 (p<0.01). Results indicate higher level of MPO, ECP and IL-5 in sinus lavage to predict better response to endosinusal steroid/antibiotic treatment.
