Sažetak
This essay aims to identify and analyse the most prominent aspects of hybridity present in Jean Rhys's novel Wide Sargasso Sea. Hybridity as one of the kernel notions of postcolonial criticism offers an excellent model for analysis of this novel since it forms the backbone of the novel’ s structure. Thus, in the first part of the essay there is a brief discussion about the theoretical traits of the notion of hybridity, starting with its biological and racial/imperialist definition which is then reversed through postcolonial theories (other notions connected to the concept of hybridity are also discussed, such as cultural difference/diversity, monolithic discourses vs. discourses of the Other, ambivalence, rhizome to name a few). In the second part of the essay various aspects of hybridity within the novel are analysed – namely, geographical, racial, cultural, religious, linguistic, narratological, as well as hybridity of identities – with the aim to show the different ways in which these aspects are interspersed and interconnected within the narrative thus forming its structural and thematical basis. The goal of this essay is to show, through a practical application of the concept of hybridity on the novel, that Wide Sargasso Sea is one of the central texts of postcolonial writing precisely because of its flexibility, of the possibilities it offers for its alternative readings.
