Sažetak
If we want to manage a forest ecosystem in a quality way, it is necessary to establish the optimum forest road infrastructure network. The realisation of the optimum forest road network is developed through four strongly connected and mutually dependent work stages: planning, designing, building and maintenance. Generally taking into consideration the problem of designing forest roads in the area of the Republic of Croatia, two significantly different areas can be distinguished. The first is a low-land area of even-aged forests whose basic features are: non-bearing or poorly bearing soil capacity, the lack of rocky material, light building material categories, the necessity of carrying out the soil stabilisation procedures, permanent character watercourses, the necessity of building bridges, and the technology of bulldozer building. The second area is the area of mountainous and hilly forest on sloping terrains characterised by high terrain inclinations, heavy building material categories, building technology by excavators with a pick-up hammer, etc. This paper will deal with designing of forest roads on sloping terrains of mountainous and hilly, primarily uneven-aged, but also even-aged forests, which, in comparison with a low-land area, is much more demanding. The basic problems encountered in designing (on the terrain and in the office) have been shown and guidelines and recommendations of their solutions have also been given.
