Sažetak
Length distributions, length-weight relationships, condition and seasonal changes in abundance of sardine, Sardina pilchardus (Walb., 1792), the major Adriatic Sea zooplanktivore and the most important fish species in the Adriatic Sea were studied. The random samples were obtained from the sardine spawning ground (off Dugi otok, N= 969) and from the nursery ground (the Krka River estuary, N=1 245). Sardine were caught by purse seine and beach seine. Representative samples were collected monthly during 2002-2004 period. Monthly fluctuations in length frequency distributions of sardine were observed. Total lengths were in range from 4.9 to 12.5 cm (mean 8.31± ; 1.41 cm, Krka River estuary) and 11.0 to 19.5 cm (off Dugi otok). The minimum and maximum weights recorded were 1.02 g and 11.18 g (mean 4.40± ; 1.87g, Krka River estuary) as well as 6.18 and 63.97 (mean 31.42± ; 8.98, off Dugi otok), respectively. Length-weight relationships of sardine from the Krka River estuary and off Dugi otok were described by the expression: (R2=0.9588) and (R2=0.8519), respectively. Isometric relative growth was established (t= 3.159 ; P<0.001) in sardine from the Krka River estuary and positive allometry (t= 2.997 ; P<0.001) in sardine from the catch samples realised off Dugi otok. Allometric condition factor (Ka) of sardine specimens, which ranged from 7.5 and 10.5 cm (Krka River estuary) and 13.0 and 16.0 cm (off Dugi otok), was analysed and showed the highest values at the beginning of autumn, especially during 2002/03 period. Later on the condition coefficient decreased until the lowest values noted in February. In terms of seasonal fluctuations in fish condition and abudance index, the decrease of both parameters was observed from 2002 to 2004.
