Sažetak
Spatial information is very important in almost all the fields of human work, especially in the field of spatial management. In this paper the island and marine area under the jurisdiction of the Republic of Croatia, which is 37 % of entire area of the Republic of Croatia, has been spatially defined and elaborated. Surface of the land area of the Republic of Croatia according to Klemenčić (1992) is 56 609, 59 km2, and the teritorial sea area about 33 200 km2. Croatian literature cites various data about the number of islands, islets, reefs and rocks in the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea: - Sobieczky (1911) 71 islands, 641 islets, 409 reefs or rocks-eastern Adriatic Sea, ; - Rubić (1952) 69 islands, 558 islets i 413 reefs - eastern Adriatic Sea ; - HIJRM (1955) 66 islands, 652 islets, 389 reefs, 78 rocks ; - Stražičić (1987) 60 islands, 653 islets, 438 reefs or rocks ; - MRIO (1997) 718 islands, 389 rocks (rock uncover high) i 78 reefs (undrewater rock). This paper is the begining of a systematic elaboration of the Croatian territorial sea area, and it should represent an initiative and guidance for scientists and economists to continue working in this field. At the Hydrographic Institute of Republic of Croatia, the first step was to digitize the coastline on topographic maps at 1: 25 000 scale (according to our knowledge these are the best and the most complete Croatian coastline data). After that, the data were transformed into the common projection system (Gauss-Kruger's projection with 16 deg 30 min central meridian). In GIS software polygon topology of all islands were made, and the database was formed. From the database, the number of islands, islets, reefs and rocks was sorted out according to their surface areas.
