Sažetak
Introduction: When we started this study as part of larger Prostate Screening Project we tried to get a look in incidence of prostate diseases on random selected population. Also we included an analysis of extensive number of hormones, vitamins and serum markers (1, 2, 3, 4). Materials and methods: Every candidate (older then 50 years) came for a physical exam including rectal examination, was taken blood for analysis and was asked to fill a semi-constructed questionnaire with question about previous medical history, LUTS, potency and libido. Based on exam results and answers patients were divided in several groups. Statistical analysis of difference in hormones levels between groups was performed. Results: Total of 972 men was taken for analysis. Of those benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was found in 225 (23%) cases, prostatitis in 49 (5%) patients, prostate cancer in 35 (4%) cases and in 663 (68%) patients we found no evidence of prostatic diseases. Levels of FSH were for BPH, prostatitis, cancer and control: 8, 2 ; 11, 2 ; 23, 2 ; 8, 1. Levels of LH for same groups were: 6, 6 ; 8, 2 ; 6, 1 ; 6, 3. Levels of free testosterone for same groups were: 43, 1 ; 42, 8 ; 47, 2 ; 43, 6. Levels of binned testosterone were, for same groups: 16, 8 ; 14, 2 ; 17, 1 ; 15, 6. Statistical analysis between BPH and control showed that there is no difference in levels of analyzed hormones. In analysis between prostatitis and prostate cancer we found a significant higher levels of free testosterone in prostate cancer (p<0, 001). Discussion: Incidence of BPH, prostatitis and prostate cancer are as expected and within range of publicized data (4, 5, 6). We found a higher levels of free testosterone in patients with prostate cancer then in those with prostatits and this difference is significant (1, 2, 3).
