Sažetak
Sustainable development of the cement and concrete industries can be achieved by complete utilization of cementitious and pozzolanic by-products, such as fly ash, slag and silica fume, produced by thermal power plants and metallurgical industries.The use of these waste materials in cement or concrete technology reduces cost of the concrete materials, conservation energy and resources and reduces environmental problems. However, the overall procentage utilization remaind very low, and most of the waste materials are dumped at landfill. A prerequisite for general acceptance of these materials as a suitable component in cement and concrete, however, is a through knowledge of its properties. The main chemical, physical, compositional and pozzolanic properties of the industrial by products from the Croatian plants, such as: silica fume, obtained from the ferro-silicon production in ex the Ferroalloys Works Dalmacija at Dugi Rat near Split and, fly ash obtained from the coal-fired Thermal Power Station Plomin 2 at Plomin, Istra were presented and discussed. Both, the silica fume and fly ash analized were meet well the Technical requirements for use as pozzolanic addition in cement or concrete.
