Sažetak
Research, on the basis of which the sociology of free time started to develop, appeared in the 1920s in the USA. Since then, numerous studies and numerous authors have pointed to the distinction between the terms work and free time and free time and leisure. Due to the polysemy of the terms listed , their defining depends on the actual society and time observed. In contemporary society, free time becomes the subject of research of many scientific disciplines: sociology, anthropology, psychology, kinesiology, economics, etc. Taking into account the characteristics of the contemporary, post-industrial society, the aim of this paper is to point to the relationship between free time, active rest and tourism in the context of contemporary society. This article starts from the definition of leisure time as “ free time that remains after one has completed his/her social duties, namely, one portion of time that is gradually left over to one’ s own choice and will. It is the set of activities that an individual chooses to engage in on his/her own free will: to rest or to have fun, to acquire knew knowledge or skills, to participate on one’ s own free will in social life or to be engaged in creative work, because he/she is free from his/her own professional, family and social duties (Dumazedier)” . Free time, particularly during vacations, outside the domicile, offers the space for doing various activities: leisure-time sport activities, education-related activities, cultural, entertainment activities, etc., according to one’ s own choice and capacities of users. Since the authors speak strongly in favour of explicating the phenomenon of leisure as the qualitative component of free time, they also discuss the role of various activities that contribute to such qualitative use of free time, particularly in tourism. On the basis of research into active rest from the point of view of sociology, anthropology, kinesiology and economics the authors wish to explain the role of active rest in tourism to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life of tourists, but also from the point of view of additional economic effects in tourism. Accordingly, what will be pointed out are the new tendencies of the development of active rest in tourism that is based on various activities and programmes.
