Sažetak
Results of previous studies suggest that cardiac activity parameters during sleep are probably much less influenced by differences in work and leisure time activities. Therefore, they might be better indicators of disturbances of the circadian physiological rhythm in shift workers, than the same parameters during the day. The aim of this study was to compare changes in heart rate variability (HRV) during sleep after a morning shift and a afternoon shift. Ten middle-aged nurses participated in this study, whose cardiac R-R intervals were continuously recorded for 24 hours for two days, which included the morning and afternoon shift. The shifts were rotated in a backward direction: two nights – two afternoons – two mornings – two days off. For the purpose of this study, R-R intervals were recorded during nine hours of the two sleeping periods (22.00 – 07.00 hrs), divided into 5-minutes periods and analysed. Power spectral density parameters - SMI (Square Modulation Index), were calculated for low (LF) and high frequencies (HF) of the two periods. The changes in lower frequency band after the mornings shift indicated a three hour longer period of sleep than after the afternoon shift. Significantly elevated mean LF during sleep was found after the afternoon shift compared with LF during sleep after the morning shift. The results suggest an increased sympathetic dominance during sleep after afternoon shift, indicating an inferior sleep quality. The differences are most probably affected by the preceding day activity or by the type of shift schedule.
